Protest and Race Riots documents preview

Protests and race riots feature frequently across a variety of the collections. While many of the protests took place as a direct result of social conditions, other riots spoke of underlying racial tensions that could explode into violence at any moment. August 1908 saw mass civil disturbance in Springfield Illinois brought about by the arrest of two African Americans, detailed in the Newberry Library collection Racial Clashes. Also mentioned in this document is the 1917 East St Louis Riot, which was one of the worst labour-and race-related riots in history, as well as the Chicago race riot of 1919. During this time, magazines and journals, such as ‘The Crisis’, Printed material: The Crisis, etc. and ‘The Messenger’, (The Messenger: World's Greatest Negro Monthly, Volume VIII, No. 6.) advocated physical resistance to the ‘white mobs’ in the form of self-defence.
